I'm not sure they work that way anymore since they stopped being CRT devices.  Knowing how the oscilloscope works in detail is also not very important at the general level (if it's even important at the extra level) - I'm more concerned that folks know what it's telling them.  You need to know how to appropriately set a trigger or attenuate inputs, not this.
